What we grind out

A leftover stump is more than an eyesore. It gets in the way of new turf, a patio, a deck or a fence line, it can resprout, and over time it rots and draws in pests. We grind it out properly so the ground is ready for whatever comes next.

Ground below the surface

We grind the stump down to between 150 and 300mm below grade, deep enough to turf, pave, plant or build straight over the top without the old stump in the way.

Cleared and left tidy

As we go, the stump turns to mulch. We rake it up and haul it off, or leave it for your garden beds. Either way you get a fixed price up front and bare ground when we leave.

Had a massive old macrocarpa stump in the back. Gone in an afternoon, ground right down, and now you'd never know it was there.

Common questions

Still not sure? Give us a call and we will talk it through.

Is grinding a tree stump worth it?

If the stump is in the way of new turf, a deck, a fence or a build, or it is resprouting or rotting and drawing pests, then yes. Grinding it out below the surface clears the ground for whatever comes next and stops the old stump causing problems down the track.

Can I grind a stump myself?

You can hire a DIY grinder, but they are heavy, awkward and can be dangerous without the right experience, and the hire cost plus your time often adds up to more than it is worth for one or two stumps. We turn up with the right machine and grind it out safely and quickly, then clean up after ourselves.

Is it cheaper to grind or remove a stump?

Grinding is usually the cheaper and tidier option. Digging or pulling a stump out is heavy, disruptive work that tears up the ground around it. Grinding turns the stump to mulch in place, below the surface, with far less mess and a level finish you can build, turf or plant straight over.

What does stump grinding cost in NZ?

There is no flat rate, and any honest quote depends on the stump. The three things that move the price are size (diameter and how deep the roots run), how many stumps you have, and access (a tight side gate or a steep Wellington section takes longer than an open lawn). We look at the job, in person or from a photo, and give you one fixed price before we start, mulch cleared and ground left level included.

Will the stump grow back?

Grinding well below ground level stops the stump resprouting and lets it break down naturally, rather than rotting at the surface.

Can you get into a tight backyard?

Usually, yes. We have compact machines that fit through standard side gates, and larger gear for open sections and big stumps.

Do you take the mulch away?

Yes, if you want us to. We rake up the chips and haul them off, or leave them for your garden beds. Either way the site is left tidy.

How deep do you grind the stump?

We grind between 150 and 300mm below the surface, deep enough to turf, pave, plant or build over the top.
